Elementary School Electives 2017-2018

Fall 2017 (14 Fridays from August-December 2017)

Archery: (Grades 3-4)

This course is hands on with learning the basic art of archery.  Instructor of Level 2 USA Archery program will teach your child the safety and instruction of archery.  Fiberglass SA Sports bows and quality light target arrows are provided.  1 teacher/4 students. $30 supply fee/student.

Cartoon: YR Drawing: (Grades 2-4)

Does your child have a great sense of humor? If so, your child will LOVE a Young Rembrandts Cartooning. Our students will jump head first into the world of cartooning by first learning expressions – our students will learn a variety of skills as their original characters seemingly emote and breathe. Students will learn to personify inanimate kitchen objects, tell a joke through pictures and learn to add motion and attitude all session long. Give your child the gift of learning and artistry this Fall 2017.  $25 Supply Fee.

Cheer/Tumbling: (Grades PK-4)

Cheer Prep is a course designed for young Lady Lions. In this spirited course, your daughter will learn what it means to be a Christ centered cheerleader. The girls will learn team building skills, confidence, how to support and encourage others, and age-appropriate cheers and stunts. In addition, this course will also have craft days where the girls will make cheer spirit sticks, spirit posters, and various other cheer related spirit crafts. The girls will perform in a pep rally and at a game with the JH and Varsity cheerleaders. During the fall semester, there will be big/little sister relationships created between the Lil Lionettes and the JH/Varsity cheerleaders that will include gift exchanges. During the spring semester, the girls will learn basic tumbling skills in addition to cheers and stunts. There is a $25 supply fee

Chef Academy: Storybook Cooking: (Grades K-2)

Each day follows a classic children’s storybook and yummy recipes related to them.  Take a journey with us on our cooking adventure.  Students will jump from story to story, fairy tale to fairy tale discovering ways to cook magic recipes.  Short stories and videos will be used to help tell the story of the enchanted recipes the students will be cooking.

Circus Arts: Chimal Circus Acts: (Grades 1-4)

Coach Alex is a professional 4th generation circus performer, coach and choreographer with over 35 years of experience. Students will have the safest training on fun circus arts activities such as juggling, unicycles, balance on low wire, hula hooping, acrobatics on tumble track, and aerial silks, hoop, or trapeze as well as teaching performance of these skills.

Club Sports: (Grades PK-4)

Each week Coach Trent Craig will cover a sports unit and will incorporate the philosophy of FFL–Fun, Fitness, and Learning.  The following units will be covered–soccer, flag football, baseball, tennis, basketball, capture the flag, dodgeball, and golf/frisbee golf with additional games and activities possible.  Basic skills, fundamentals, rules, and strategy are taught and incorporated into healthy, kid friendly competition with an emphasis on teamwork, fairness, good sportsmanship, accountability, encouragement, unselfishness, and leadership.

Digital Music Lab: (Grades 2-4)

Music Videos Using Audio Engineering tools, such as Garage Band, students will work together to create a music video of their choosing. This video could contains scenes with actors, or could be an animation generated video. Who knows what these students will compose! No musical experience necessary.

Golf: TGA Golf: (Grades PK-4)

TGA Premier Junior Golf will be offering Golf for grades PK-4. Students will progress through two TGA levels! All equipment is provided by TGA. In this course, students will learn through drills, games and challenges. They will also be introduced to course rules and golf etiquette. Skills include: putting, chipping, “3/4” swing and full swing.

Gymnastics: Chimal Circus Arts: (Grades 2-4)

Gymnastics (Grades 2-4): Coach Alex Chimal is a certified gymnastics coach with USA Gymnastics and has coached gymnastics at a competitive level. He has 35 years of acrobatic experience as a professional circus performer, trainer and spotter. Gymnastics benefits students in any of the sports as well as the cheer leading class. Students will work on balance, gross motor skills, flexibility and strength as well as teaching safety.  We bring a tumble track, bars, rings, mats, balance beam and mini trampoline.

Homework Help: (Grades PK-4)

Ever wish you had just another hour for your student to do homework? Here’s your chance…Homework Help is a study hall for elementary students. Students and parents can get the best of both worlds… Students can enjoy the fun of participating in Friday electives and parents can feel confident that they are able to complete a little homework too! In this class, students are required to bring some sort of homework or reading material to each class period. Class will work like a study hall where students are required to do quiet, independent school work. Electronic devices, etc. will not be allowed. Homework Help will be monitored by a staff/faculty member who will be able to assist the students if needed.

How Stuff Works: Secrets of Flight: (Grades K-2)

Experiment with unique airplane designs and see what works better. Create a hover-craft that floats and much more. Lots of fun and creativity for our curious students. Have you ever wondered why planes fly so high? How can helicopters just hover as if they were a hummingbird? What are the future applications of flight? Students will ask these questions as Idea Lab explores the science of flights. They will even examine the use of flight by animals. Projects include different flying apparatus, stop-motion animation, and the exploration of all the things that fly.

Intro to Music: (Grades PK-4)

Intro to Music is a fun, dynamic class! Students will learn rhythm, technique, theory, and musical vocabulary. This course features fun filled musical games designed to help improve memory along with cognitive and developmental skills. Early childhood educators will teach music in a fun, interactive way. In addition to reading and practicing music, students will also learn about famous composers, the history of music, and will gain exposure to different (age appropriate) musical genres and styles. Children will learn on pianos/keyboards, tambourines, Djimbe’s/drums and more! A keyboard, piano, or any other instrument is not required at home to participate.

Jr. 3D Art Factory: (Grades K-2)

Students jump off of the 2-D page and explore the world of 3-D sculpture, 3-D illusions, and 3D creations. You will be amazed by what Idea Lab can inspire within your child.

Jr. Drone Missions for Solving World Problems: (Grades 2-4)

Recruiting junior pilots to solve world problems through the lens of a drone. Our pilots will learn about drones and go on missions that include challenges and courses with drones. Our junior drone pilots will have a world of imagination open to them for coming up with fresh ideas to problems in the world.

Kids for Jesus: (Grades PK-4)

“Kids for Jesus” is an interactive Bible study club that not only studies God’s word but brings it to life in fun and exciting new ways your child will love! Students will read stories, do crafts, plan and complete mission projects, and even do experiments to learn what the Bible says about being a disciple and having Christ-like character!”

LEGO Robotics: (Grades 1-4)

Idea Lab Robotics camps provide fun, hands-on projects to get your child’s creative juices flowing. Working with a Robotics coach, kids will learn how to build and program robots – all while making friends, developing new skills and having a great time with STEM.

Lil Lion Football: (Grades 2-4)

Lil Lion Football is a course designed for potential future football players and kids who want to improve coordination, footwork, and athletic performance.  In this course, Coach Trent Craig will cover basic fundamentals and skills of football in a non-contact environment.  Skill development includes passing, catching, handoffs, agility, rules, positions, and route running through drills, kid friendly competition, and flag football scrimmage play.  Conditioning, teamwork, and good sportsmanship are also strongly emphasized in every class. $25 Supply Fee.

Martial Arts: Premier Martial Arts: (Grades PK-4)

(Grades PK-K): The Lil Champions is a program specially design for young students between the ages of 4 – 6 years. This class is an age- appropriate, fun filled class that focuses on teaching the students to not only do karate, but learn important lessons that will aid them as they move towards their school age years. Parents who enroll their child into a Lil Champions class notice that their “little one” becomes more focused, more coordinated, able to take turns, as well as, developing better social skills. Students also learn important self-defense skills such as not talking to strangers, recognizing child lures, remembering your telephone number, fire safety, and avoiding poisonous household products. *** This class meets once a week on Friday at Legacy. A supply fee of $30 is required to cover equipment needed for the course. (Uniform, gloves and rank belt).

(Grades 1-2): Martial Arts I & II is a class specially for children ages 6 – 11 years. This class allows students to improve themselves through a curriculum specifically design to enhance their physical performance, as well as, an awesome values curriculum that teaches lessons on the importance of a positive self- image, respect, kindness and perseverance. Although the class is fast paced and uses game styled activities, students are encouraged to pay attention to detail and that every skill they learn will build into another more detailed skill later. The teachers of this class facilitate this by giving constant attention to each student, encouraging students to demonstrate what they have learned to the class, and participating in positive forms of, in class, competition. In addition to learning physical karate, students are taught and encouraged to act and think like a Black Belt. Students learn that being a Black Belt means much more than just knowing a few punches and kicks. A Black Belt means being dedicated to trying your very best in every class, as well as, outside activities. Students also learn that Black Belts are respectful to everyone they meet and that the actual use of the techniques they learn in class is always the absolute last choice in every situation. *** This class meets once a week on Friday at Legacy. A supply fee of $30 is required to cover equipment needed for the course. (Uniform, gloves and rank belt).

Math Tutor: (Grades 1-4)

Need a little extra help in math? Here’s the perfect opportunity to review basic math facts and any math school work that needs extra attention.

Medical Sciences: Future Doctors: (Grades K-2)

Young students explore the beginning stages of becoming a doctor. This year, Idea Lab Medical School has inspiring plans training future doctors. Starting with science exploration and experiments, as well as creative play, the students enter the world of medicine. Don’t have your doctor’s bag with you? Don’t worry you will after completing this course. Students will proudly carry a doctor’s bag filled with all the necessary tools as a graduate of Idea Lab Medical School.

Minecraft Mod Design and Play: (Grades 1-4)

Minecraft Modding is a fun way to get an introduction to computer programming. Using an intricate system, intertwined with Minecraft, students will be able to modify their games and see the results in ways they could only imagine.

Nutty Scientists: (Grades PK-4)

Fun, interactive, hands-on, and above all educational science classes through innovative teaching techniques and curriculum from The Nutty Scientists. Each week, we will cover a different topic in chemistry, physics, astronomy, biology, anatomy, engineering or technology.  Nutty Scientists is all about getting your kids excited and passionate about science!

Reading Workshop: (Grades 1-2)

In Reading workshop, we work with a small group of students on skills depending on their needs. Whether it is phonetic awareness, work attack skills, fluency, or reading comprehension your child is struggling with this course will help them build self-confidence as they strengthen and become better readers.  Most of all we want to make reading meaningful and fun while instilling a love for reading.

Soccer: Soccer Shots: (Grades PK-4)

Soccer Shots is a nationally recognized program that offers a high-energy, fun and age appropriate introduction to the wonderful game of soccer to both boys and girls. In addition, Soccer Shots works on improving children’s gross motor skills and teaches children important concepts such as teamwork, sharing and respect. Spanish –The Language Spark: (Grades PK-4)

The Language Spark will be offering Spanish Immersion classes this year at Legacy.  The Language Spark’s goal is to ignite a love of learning Spanish in young children and to do so in fun, innovative ways.  Our curriculum is theme-based so that children will be engaged in subject-area material each week.  We bring Spanish to life through current Second-Language Acquisition techniques.  Children will also play games, sing songs, use manipulatives, make crafts and watch short videos in Spanish in order to acquire new vocabulary and phrases.  $15 Supply Fee.

Stop Motion Animation: Dinosaur Alive!: (Grades 2-4)

Bring dinosaurs alive through your stories. Stop Motion Animation is an excellent way to explore the world of movie making. Kids will need to write, record, and edit their very own dinosaur adventure.

Super-Secret Spy School: (Grades 1-4)

An elite group of recruits is lurking in the shadows preparing to take on top secret missions. No one really knows who they are, or for that matter, what they are really up to. Now it’s your turn to join their ranks. Day starts with top secret briefings to unfold the mission for the day. Learn about blood typing, fingerprint analysis and dental forensics to crack any case. Your training includes building lie detector machines and creating composite sketches. Students will train to secure a crime scene, gather clues and process evidence in the crime lab. A great class full of hands-on activities for the budding detective!

Sweets and Treats: Baking Workshop with 3D Printed Décor: (Grades 1-4)

Mmmm. Seeking junior bakers to create new delectable treats. Our junior bakers will get a crash course on sweets and technology and create unique treats to enjoy.

Tennis: TGA (Grades PK-4th)

TGA makes it convenient and fun for your child to learn and play tennis right on their school campus!  Our proprietary curriculum’s for elementary school and middle school were created by TGA’s education experts and the United States Tennis Association (USTA). Students will experience a mix of tennis instruction, rules & etiquette lessons, educational components, character development lessons and physical activity as they advance through the five-level program.  Our screened and certified instructors have a passion for working with children and are trained to help your student athlete develop a strong foundation of skills and knowledge as well as a passion for the sport.

Tinker, Build & Explore STEM: (Grades K-2)

Tinker, build, explore as students actively engage in engineering challenges. Utilizing their journal throughout the classes, they will document each activity they perform in order to fully absorb the creative process of engineering. The classes will be supported by learning techniques like kid teaching strategies, team building exercises, exploring ways to solve problems. Like playing with LEGOS, but tinkering with very different engineering innovations.

Volleyball: (Girls Grades 2-4)

For this elective focus will be on basic volleyball skills and sportsmanship. While doing fun games and drills, they will learn the rules, positions, and terminology of volleyball.  Your child will be encouraged, but not required to attend Legacy High School volleyball games. This will help reinforce what they are learning and allow them to get to know some of the high school volleyball players.  $25 Supply Fee.

Young Rembrandt Drawing: Level 1: (Grades PK- 1st) 

Young Rembrandts classes will challenge and excite your budding artist while prepare your child as a lifelong learner. Drawings like the marbles will help them master the art of creating a circle, a deceptively simple yet complex shape. The acorn and apple tree drawing will strengthen your child’s compositional skills and use of colors. Basic facial and figure drawing will also be addressed as our students learn to draw a funny clown and scarecrow. These are just a few of the many great lessons our students will learn this semester: a new drawing every week, and a full set of skills to keep forever.  THEY WILL LOVE IT! $25 supply fee.

Young Rembrandt Drawing: Level 2: (Grades 2 – 4)

Back to school is in full swing as we present a bountiful selection of drawings that introduces our students to a fascinating world of color, pattern, and design. We say farewell to summer in our detailed still life drawing of a beach. We explore color usage and composition in our chameleon and fire truck drawings. In keeping with the season, our stylized fall leaves drawing challenges our technique and color scheme. Our students will learn cultural themes as they draw and color Hawaii inspired art. All this and more awaits your kid this Fall 2017 in a Young Rembrandts elective at Legacy. $25 supply fee.
