COURSE DESCRIPTIONS FOR 2017-2018 FRIDAY ELECTIVE CLASSES 

Adventure for Boys: (Grades 2-4)

Outdoor activities and fun-to-do craft projects that will get boys acquainted with facts about nature, identify different insects and birds, recognize different kinds of rocks, read a map, tie knots, etc. Course offered contingent on enrollment.

Art:

(Grades PK-K): This course is intended as a hands-on activity class involving a variety of small projects. Students will receive instruction and practice in cutting, gluing, and coloring as they work with different materialssuch as construction paper, wood, crayons, clay, etc. Even at this early age their artistic awareness will be developed as they discover the basic principles of art through their experience with different types of media. There is a $15 supply fee. Course offered contingent on enrollment.

(Grades 1-2): This semester-long course is an introduction to art and is intended to lay a solid foundation for subsequent art classes. Students receive instruction and practice in drawing and painting. Even at this early age their artistic awareness is developed as they discover their creativity and make projects that develop their fine motor skills through their experience with a variety of media. There is a $15 supply fee. Course offered contingent on enrollment.

(Grades 3-4): In this semester-long course, students learn to demonstrate competency in various styles, techniques and media. Students receive instruction and practice in graphite and charcoal drawing, wet and dry media, mixed media, collage and sculpture. Artistic awareness is developed as they discover the basic principles of art—fine control of lines, using shapes and forms to create movement and balance, blending and mixing color, texture contrast, value as contrast, overlapping perspective, and radial balance. In addition, students develop a working visual and cognitive vocabulary of art concepts. There is a $15 supply fee. Course offered contingent on enrollment.

Basketball Boys: Lil Lion Basketball: (Grades 2-4)

Lil Lion Basketball is a course designed for future basketball players.  In this course, Coach Trent Craig will cover basic fundamentals and skills of basketball such as dribbling, passing, shooting, rules, and strategy through drills, kid friendly competitions, and scrimmage play.  Conditioning, teamwork, and good sportsmanship are also strongly emphasized in every class.  Lil Lion basketball players will also play in a halftime display during the Student/Staff Basketball Game.

Basketball Girls: (Grades 2-4)

Spring semester is a course designed for young future basketball payers. In this course, your daughter will learn team building, confidence and the rules of basketball while learning how to play basketball. Conditioning, teamwork, and good sportsmanship are also strongly emphasized in every class.

Bricks4Kidz:

Junior Builders (Grades PK-K) Younger students build fun and simple models using LEGO® Technic bricks, allowing them to build in a scale designed for their little hands.  Models include a seesaw, rolling vehicle, spinning top, raft, and many more. By playing with and manipulating the models, younger children are introduced to pulleys, levers, gears, wheels and axles while exploring energy, buoyancy, and balance.

Motorized Machines (Grades 1-4) This class will build and explore complex machines and mechanisms using LEGO® Technic bricks and accessories which include gears, axles, electric motors, sensors and remote controls.  Your budding engineer will investigate motorized machines and study gearing mechanisms in an engaging way that makes STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) concepts fun.

Master Builders – WeDo Robotics (Grades 2-4) This class will be offered to those students that were in our program in the Fall.  Using our WeDo robotics kits, we will work with your child to select an age appropriate model to build, program and modify.  Using drag-and-drop icons, the Lego® WeDo software provides an introduction into the world of computer-programming.  We will also introduce our challenge builds.  The challenge builds use our project kits and challenges the student to take building to a higher level.

Ceramics: (Grades 3-4)

This class will be a fun and artistic experience for your student. students will explore the pottery process from sculpting clay to painting pieces of pottery from a local ceramics store. They will learn how to use various brushes, sponges, and tools to give texture and different effects. Students will become aware of the stages the pottery needs to be completed.

Molds will be provided to the students each week for them to paint. Course is offered contingent on enrollment.

Cheer/Tumbling: (Grades PK-4)

Cheer Prep is a course designed for young Lady Lions. In this spirited course, your daughter will learn what it means to be a Christ centered cheerleader. The girls will learn team building skills, confidence, how to support and encourage others, and age-appropriate cheers and stunts. In addition, this course will also have craft days where the girls will make cheer spirit sticks, spirit posters, and various other cheer related spirit crafts. The girls will perform in a pep rally and at a game with the JH and Varsity cheerleaders. During the fall semester, there will be big/litter sister relationships created between the Lil Lionettes and the JH/Varsity cheerleaders that will include gift exchanges. During the spring semester, the girls will learn basic tumbling skills in addition to cheers and stunts.

Chess: USA Chess Club: (Grades PK-4)

Chess classes with USA Chess.  Our experienced chess instructor will teach children of all levels the game of chess.  Kids have a blast learning and playing one of the oldest and most widely played game in the world.  Each hour-long session consists of one half hour lesson geared toward the abilities of the students and one half hour practice and play.

Club Sports: (Grades PK-4)

Each week Coach Trent Craig will cover a sports unit and will incorporate the philosophy of FFL–Fun, Fitness, and Learning.  The following units will be covered–soccer, flag football, baseball, tennis, basketball, capture the flag, dodgeball, and golf/frisbee golf with additional games and activities possible.  Basic skills, fundamentals, rules, and strategy are taught and incorporated into healthy, kid friendly competition with an emphasis on teamwork, fairness, good sportsmanship, accountability, encouragement, unselfishness, and leadership.

Cooking: (Grades 1-4)

Calling all cooks! Ever want to teach your children the importance of kitchen safety and use of kitchen appliances? And, how about how to make healthy choices or to help with shopping lists? Well, this class is for you. Lions in the Kitchen will teach your student basic kitchen safety, how to read labels and recipes, using kitchen tools, how to follow a recipe, using the microwave and small oven, planning meals, making healthy choices and even dining etiquette and manners. Class will be broken down into two sections – 1st & 2nd graders and 3rd & 4th graders. There will be a $15 supply fee for this course. Course offered contingent on enrollment.

CYT Theater:

(Grades PK-1): This class, taught by experienced Christian Youth Theater teachers, introduces children to the fundamentals of theater, using songs, drama games, skits, and theater fun. It is designed to build self-confidence and stimulate imagination. The students will present a showcase to parents during the last class session. Course offered contingent on enrollment.

(Grades 2-4): This multi-faceted beginning drama class deals with the fundamentals of acting, staging, movement and interpretation. Learn how to use your senses and draw upon them to develop characters. Our experienced Christian Youth Theater teachers will build on students’ existing skills and help them learn new ones. The students will present a showcase to parents during the last class session. Course offered contingent on enrollment.

Gardening: (Grades PK-4)

Learn basic gardening knowledge including: Soils, planting seasons, composting, and will plant a school garden. Will gain knowledge about nutrition in the garden and how to care for plants. Course offered contingent on enrollment.

Golf: TGA Golf (Grades PK-4)

TGA Premier Junior Golf will be offering Golf for grades 1-4. Students will progress through two TGA levels! All equipment is provided by TGA. In this course, students will learn through drills, games and challenges. They will also be introduced to course rules and golf etiquette. Skills include: putting, chipping, “3/4” swing and full swing. Course offered contingent on enrollment.

Guitar: Lessons on the Go Guitar (Grades 2-4)

Guitar 101 by Lessons on The Go – Guitar 101 is a fun, interactive course that fosters a love of music and makes playing the guitar a fun experience for every student. This program focuses on music theory, technique, rhythm, stage performance, reading charts, and so much more! Students learn new skills through contemporary songs to make learning an exciting, confidence building experience. Students will be responsible for providing a guitar for the class.

Gymnastics/Circus Acts: Chimal Circus Acts

Gymnastics (Grades PK-1): We work on balance, gross motor skills, flexibility and strength as well as teaching safety that can be used for any sport.  Children this young usually need the basics of gymnastics before he/she can do the circus arts activities such as balance on a low wire, balance on the unicycle, climbing the silks, or juggling. We bring a bumble track, bars, rings, mats, balance beam and mini trampoline. Gymnastics (Grades 2-4): The gymnastics training benefits the students in any of the sports at your school as well as the cheer leading class. Circus Act Class (Grades 1-4): is unique and popular with the kids as well.  In the 2nd class, we would focus training on specific circus arts such as juggling, unicycles, balance on low wire, hula hooping, and aerial silks as well as teaching performance of these skills. We also incorporate some tumbling into the circus class as well.

Fencing: Alliance Fencing Academy: (Grades K-4)

Alliance Fencing Academy brings Legacy the elegant sport of fencing, always popular in Europe, is now gaining phenomenal popularity in the United States and in the Greater Houston area. Many Americans are discovering the benefits of fencing such as helping young people gain admission and scholarships to prestigious universities, as well as providing a life-long sport in which physique and age are not limitations. Fencing is often referred to as “Physical Chess” as it develops both your mind and body. Come join in the fun! Do something different!

Hip/Hop Dance: Excelsior School of Dance: (Grades PK-4)

This Hip Hop class is designed for beginner and experienced boys and girls. Each student will learn how to count elementary grade music, while acquiring musicality through games and combinations as we work through the steps together in a fun-filled Christian environment. They will have a hands on experience with the anatomy of their muscles by learning how to use them to accomplish a movement goal, as well as, gather the importance of working together in a group. They will also gain performance quality and confidence with the memorization of the exercises we do throughout the semester which we will integrate into a year-end dance.

Homemade for Girls: (Grades 2-4)

In Homemade for Girls, students will learn the “homemade” skills that our mothers and grandmothers learned. Students will be taught how to stitch by hand, finger-knitting, and other “DIY” skills. This class is for grades 2-4 and a $25 supply fee will be used for materials. Course is offered contingent on enrollment.

Homework Help: (Grades PK-4)

Ever wish you had just another hour for your student to do homework? Here’s your chance…Homework Help is a study hall for elementary students. Students and parents can get the best of both worlds… Students can enjoy the fun of participating in Friday electives and parents can feel confident that they are able to complete a little homework too! In this class, students are required to bring some sort of homework or reading material to each class period. Class will work like a study hall where students are required to do quiet, independent school work. Electronic devices, etc. will not be allowed. Homework Help will be monitored by a staff/faculty member who will be able to assist the students if needed. Course will be offered regardless of enrollment.

Literature in the Kitchen: (Grades PK-1)

Literature in the kitchen is a fun class for students who enjoy the “reading and cooking” combination. The students will be introduced to books about foods from another countries or foods from an exciting story. Then the fun continues with the students cooking/baking what they’ve read.

Martial Arts: DoJo Martial Arts

(Grades PK-K): The Dojo Dragons is a program specially design for young students between the ages of 4 – 6 years. This class is an age- appropriate, fun filled class that focuses on teaching the students to not only do karate, but learn important lessons that will aid them as they move towards their school age years. Parents who enroll their child into a Dojo Dragons class notice that their “little one” becomes more focused, more coordinated, able to take turns, as well as, developing better social skills. Students also learn important self-defense skills such as not talking to strangers, recognizing child lures, remembering your telephone number, fire safety, and avoiding poisonous household products. *** This class meets once a week at Legacy on Fridays and additional training days at the Dojo studio are included with the class. All uniforms and belt testing is included in the cost. Course offered contingent on enrollment.

(Grades 1-2): Martial Arts I & II is a class specially designed for children ages 6 – 11 years. This class allows students to mentally and physically improve themselves through learning the martial art of Chun Kuk Do. Although the class is fast paced and uses game styled activities, students are encouraged to pay attention to detail and that every skill they learn will build into another more detailed skill later. The teachers of this class facilitate this by giving constant attention to each student, encouraging students to demonstrate what they have learned to the class, and participating in positive forms of, in class, competition. In addition to learning physical karate, students are taught and encouraged to act and think like a Black Belt. Students learn that being a Black Belt means much more that just knowing a few punches and kicks. A Black Belt means being dedicated to trying your very best in every class, as well as, outside activities. Students also learn that Black Belts are respectful to everyone they meet and that the actual use of the techniques they learn in class is always the absolute last choice in every situation. *** This class meets once a week at Legacy on Fridays and additional training days at the Dojo studio are included with the class. All uniforms and belt testing is included in the cost. Course offered contingent on enrollment.

Piano: Lessons on the Go Piano: (Grades PK-4)

Students will learn proper technique, theory, and music vocabulary from experienced staff members from Lessons on the Go. In addition to reading and practicing music, students will also learn about famous composers, the history of music, and be exposed to different (appropriate) music genres and styles. Students will need a keyboard or piano at home to practice weekly songs from curriculum. Course offered contingent on enrollment.

Pinterest Crafts: (Grades 3-4)

Students will enjoy the art of crafting! They will complete a variety of fun and creative projects all that can be found on Pinterest. They will learn the skills and creativity to create these crafts. Class fees include all necessary items to complete the crafts and other items will be available for the student’s use. There is a $30 supply fee associated with this class. Course is offered contingent on enrollment.

Science Lab: (Grades 1-4)

In this semester long course, students will be involved in hands-on science based activities involving a variety of small projects and labs. Students will receive instruction and practice in many of the scientific steps including measurements, mixtures and solutions. This is a fun and exciting way to explore science labs and God’s beautiful creations. Course is offered contingent on enrollment.

Soccer Shots: (Grades PK-4)

Soccer Shot is a nationally recognized program that offers a high-energy, fun and age appropriate introduction to the wonderful game of soccer to both boys and girls. In addition, Soccer Shots works on improving children’s gross motor skills and teaches children important concepts such as teamwork, sharing and respect. Spanish: (Grades K-4)

Elementary Spanish:  Parents and teachers know children learn language by using language to make sense in their world.  In this class rather than relying on drills and memorization to learn Spanish, children participate in meaningful projects and interactive games.  In the process of all this making and doing, children hear and try a new language, Spanish!

In this Spanish Elementary Class, students will be doing the following:

  1. They will learn the basic sound of letters and vowels.
  2. Learn vocabulary related to daily living.
  3. Will complete crafts/worksheets related to the lesson.
  4. Students will learn about the traditions and geography of Spanish speaking countries. 

Tennis: (Grades 1-4)

Certified tennis professional Trent Craig (USPTA and PBI) will offer tennis clinics in addition to his Club Sports elective class and Tuesday/Thursday PE classes at Legacy. Trent has over 23 years of tennis teaching experience in Texas, Puerto Rico, Mexico, Anguilla, and the U.S. and British Virgin Islands. The class will cover tennis strokes such as the volley, forehand/backhand groundstrokes, and serve with a major emphasis on fundamentals of those strokes–positioning, strategy, racquet/ball control, and foundations of tennis will also be incorporated as themes. These classes will be structured differently than typical clinics in this area–there will be lots of instruction and teaching incorporated into the fun and competition, not just drills and games. There will also be very little standing in line, with time between strokes often being utilized for movement, conditioning, and FUN! If you are looking for a tennis clinic that will incorporate lots of learning into fun and kid friendly competition, this is it! Enrollment limited to 8 students per class.
