Friday Elective Class Descriptions – Grades PK-4th

Spring 2019 (16 Fridays from January -May 2019)

All classes offered are contingent on enrollment

Lil Lion Boys Basketball: (Grades 2-4) is for kids who want to have FUN while learning the sport of basketball! In this course, Legacy PE/Club Sports Coach Trent Craig will cover basic fundamentals and skills of basketball such as dribbling, passing, shooting, rules, and strategy. There will be drills, kid friendly competitions, and scrimmage play. Conditioning, teamwork, and good sportsmanship are also strongly emphasized in every class. $25 supply fee.

Lil Lion Girls Basketball: (Grades 2-4) We will focus on the fundamentals of the game. Through ball handling drills and shooting games, we will enhance the girls’ skills. The goal is to help each child develop at their own individual pace in a fun environment. In addition, they will also learn the rules of play and practice drills for home. $25 supply fee.

Carma’s Creations –Dance/Ballet/Jazz (Grades PK-1); Dance/Jazz/Tap (Grades 2-4) The goal of each class is to develop an appreciation for the art of dance. The classes are designed to increase coordination and motor skills as well as confidence and flexibility. Classes are upbeat, safe and structured. Each class will consist of a warm-up, technique time, a routine segment, review of the daily lesson, a cool down and most of all – FUN! Dancers will need tap shoes for tap class. There will be a final performance for parents. Carma has been a business owner, choreographer, and dance teacher for over 25 years. In the early years of her dance career, Carma performed and competed throughout the United States and Europe. She won several national and international awards for her choreography skills and dance ability. She has produced over 25 dance recitals with over 250 dancers and a 35 person backstage crew. Carma has shared her love of dance with thousands of children over the past 2 1/2 decades. She would be honored to share this love with your child. Carma is licensed, insured, and has been fingerprinted and background checked. She also has her First Aid/CPR Certification. $35 supply fee.

Cartoon: YR Drawing: (Grades 2-4) Does your child have a great sense of humor? If so, your child will LOVE a Young Rembrandts Cartooning. Our students will jump head first into the world of cartooning by first learning expressions – our students will learn a variety of skills as their original characters seemingly emote and breathe. Students will learn to personify inanimate kitchen objects, tell a joke through pictures and learn to add motion and attitude all session long. Give your child the gift of learning and artistry this Spring 2019. $25 Supply Fee.

Cheer: (Grades PK-1; 2-4) In this elective, girls will learn basic chants and cheers as well as proper form. They will also learn some of the same cheers done by the Legacy High School Cheer Squad. Additionally, the girls will learn the importance of working in a group as well as independently. The class will also cover why cheerleaders are important, and how they help the school and teams. There is a $25 supply fee.

Chinese: Foreign Language (Grades PK-4) Mandarin (Chinese)—Texas Phoenix International School (TPIS) Culture, Mandarin (Chinese) and Fun! Texas Phoenix International school- Chinese class will create a culture-rich, activity-rich learning environment for young students. We believe that a language must be understood within the context of its society and culture. Our Chinese classes not only help young students learn Chinese, but also focus on Chinese culture, which will start to help beginners understand the language on a holistic level. We will help young students learn meaningful and interesting communication and emphasize the relevance of “here and now.” Our classes will cover a wide range of speech events, such as role-play, drama, activities and games to form a foundation for Chinese acquisition.

Choir: (Grades 2-4) Come join the choir! This class will be provide a great opportunity for the students to not only learn how to sing in a choir, but how they can use their voices to praise God. During this semester, students will learn the fundamentals of music theory, music history and will be performing two learned pieces the final week. The fundamentals taught will not only benefit the students in a choir setting, but will give them a foundation for instrument playing or song writing! Looking forward to singing with you! Choir will be taught by Mrs. Ann Elise Hunter.

Circus Arts: (Grades 1-4) Coach Alex is a professional 4th generation circus performer, coach and choreographer with over 35 years of experience. Students will have the safest training on fun circus arts activities such as juggling, unicycles, balance on low wire, hula hooping, acrobatics on tumble track, and aerial silks, hoop, or trapeze as well as teaching performance of these skills.

Club Sports: (Grades PK-1; 2-4) Each week Coach Trent Craig will cover a sports unit and will incorporate the philosophy of FFL– Fun, Fitness, and Learning. The following units will be covered–soccer, flag football, baseball, tennis, basketball, capture the flag, dodgeball, and golf/frisbee golf with additional games and activities possible. Basic skills, fundamentals, rules, and strategy are taught and incorporated into healthy, kid friendly competition with an emphasis on teamwork, fairness, good sportsmanship, accountability, encouragement, unselfishness, and leadership.

Coder Kids: Exploring Basic Coding (Grades K – 2) Prepare now for the future! In this class students will learn the basics of computer programming by working in apps like ScratchJr, playing with games like Robot Turtles, working on Osmo coding, and more! The main purpose of the class is to teach students basic logic and sequencing skills to prepare them to be successful in Scratch.

Coder Kids: Make Games in Scratch (Grades 3 – 4) Does your child love video games? Let us teach them how to make their own! In this class, students will make creative games and animations using Scratch. Scratch is built for beginners and builds the fundamentals for moving into more advanced programming languages. By the end of our class, students will have a small portfolio of games and animations to show off to friends and the skills to build their own. No coding experience required.

Golf: (Grades PK-4) TGA Premier Junior Golf will be offering Golf for grades PK-4. Students will progress through two TGA levels! All equipment is provided by TGA. In this course, students will learn through drills, games and challenges. They will also be introduced to course rules and golf etiquette. Skills include: putting, chipping, “3/4” swing and full swing. Along with the introduction to golf and tennis, TGA also incorporates S.T.E.A.M (STEM) training into their curriculum. That would be TNT DYNAMITE!

Gymnastics: (Grades PK-4) Coach Alex Chimal is a certified gymnastics coach with USA Gymnastics and has coached gymnastics at a competitive level. He has 35 years of acrobatic experience as a professional circus performer, trainer and spotter. Gymnastics benefits students in any of the sports as well as the cheer leading class. Students will work on balance, gross motor skills, flexibility and strength as well as teaching safety. We bring a tumble track, bars, rings, mats, balance beam and mini trampoline.

Homework Help: (Grades PK-4) Ever wish you had just another hour for your student to do homework? Here’s your chance…Homework Help is a study hall for elementary students. Students and parents can get the best of both worlds… Students can enjoy the fun of participating in Friday electives and parents can feel confident that they are able to complete a little homework too! In this class, students are required to bring some sort of homework or reading material to each class period. Class will work like a study hall where students are required to do quiet, independent school work. Electronic devices, etc. will not be allowed. Homework Help will be monitored by a staff/faculty member who will be able to assist the students if needed.

Literature in the Kitchen: (Grades PK-K) Literature in the kitchen is a fun class for students who enjoy the “reading and cooking” combination. The students will be introduced to books about foods from another countries or foods from an exciting story. Then the fun continues with the students cooking/baking what they’ve read. $25 supply fee.

Little Beakers: (Grades K-4) With its trademark hands-on philosophy, Little Beakers’ weekly STEM-intensive lab sessions will excite and engage students through projects that encompass chemistry, physics, biology, microbiology, biochemistry, forensic science, earth science, geology, space science, astronomy, and more. With lab coats and safety glasses provided each week, project work will be accomplished through: * The use of laboratory equipment, including standard and digital microscopes * Simple dissections of preserved specimens * The interactive study of atoms and mater using molecular building models * Brief reviews of key historical scientists and inventors Little Beakers….created by a scientist for future scientists!

Martial Arts: (Grades 1-4) Cox ATA Martial Arts. – top Martial Arts School in Magnolia. As a member of the largest Martial Arts organization in the world, American Taekwondo Association (ATA), you can be assured that you will be getting the very best. Our Instructors train every student to the best of their ability. Some students come fit, while others come out of shape, limited flexibility or never participated in any kind of fitness activity. As a student, you are looked upon as an individual, never compared to anyone else. Our instructors will be with you every step of the way. All that is expected is a willingness to try. Soccer: Soccer Shots: (Grades PK-4) Soccer Shots is an engaging children’s soccer program with a focus on character development. Our caring team positively impacts children’s lives on and off the field through best-in class coaching, curriculum and communication. Our expert-approved curriculum is age-appropriate and aligns with childhood education standards and Texas Early Learning Guidelines. Soccer Shots is also the official partner for US Youth Soccer. In addition, we provide an exceptional customer experience and ongoing communication with parents.

Spanish: The Language Spark (Grades PK-4) The Language Spark will be offering Spanish Immersion classes this year at Legacy. The Language Spark’s goal is to ignite a love of learning Spanish in young children and to do so in fun, innovative ways. Our curriculum is theme-based so that children will be engaged in subject area material each week. We bring Spanish to life through current Second-Language Acquisition techniques. Children will also play games, sing songs, use manipulatives, make crafts and watch short videos in Spanish in order to acquire new vocabulary and phrases. Hoping to have 2 Levels – Beginning & Advance groups this Spring. $15 Supply Fee.

Stronger Kid’s Challenge: (Grades 1-4) This is a fun elective full of activities to engage the student’s interests and encourage healthy choices while giving students the opportunity to understand the challenges associated with growing food. They will compete in activities, create delicious snacks, engage in exercise, and ensure proper hydration as they explore the impact of healthy living on their bodies. Students will become urban farmers as they grow and eat food from a Tower Garden.

Stronger To Serve- Kindness Half-Marathon: Students in grades K-4 will run with their friends to complete a half-marathon and participate in fun kindness challenges for the community! They will get to learn about goal setting, easy ways to show kindness and stop bullying, and how to help animals, veterans, seniors, hungry families and many more.

Tennis: TGA (Grades PK-4) TGA makes it convenient and fun for your child to learn and play tennis right on their school campus! Our proprietary curriculum’s for elementary school and middle school were created by TGA’s education experts and the United States Tennis Association (USTA). Students will experience a mix of tennis instruction, rules & etiquette lessons, educational components, character development lessons and physical activity as they advance through the five-level program. Our screened and certified instructors have a passion for working with children and are trained to help your student athlete develop a strong foundation of skills and knowledge as well as a passion for the sport. Along with the introduction to golf and tennis, TGA also incorporates S.T.E.A.M (STEM) training into their curriculum. That would be TNT DYNAMITE!

Yoga: Yo-Yogi’s (Grades 1-4); Tiny Toes Yoga (Grades PK-1) Yo-Yogi’s – Yoga a fun journey through storytelling and interactive games including traditional asana (posture) practices and meditation. This program is a perfect preschool enhancing enrichment! Tiny Toes Yoga – This yoga experience uses traditional asana (postures), breathing techniques, and guided kid-friendly meditations. Thrive Yoga Kids Classes focus on allowing kids to move, be engaged in a literacy experience through storytelling and discover ways to relax with breathing techniques. We provide an educational journey. Kids learn about yoga, the body and mind. We cultivate creativity, play and awareness through our yoga and wellness programs. In each class, we talk about what good deeds we have done in the week leading up to our gathering, and we take individual and collective joy in the act of consciously doing good unto others. Thrive Yoga classes foster strength, creativity, focus, cooperation, and confidence for a happy, healthy and balanced life.

Young Rembrandt Drawing: Level 1 (Grades PK- 1) Young Rembrandts classes will challenge and excite your budding artist while prepare your child as a lifelong learner. Drawings like the marbles will help them master the art of creating a circle, a deceptively simple yet complex shape. The acorn and apple tree drawing will strengthen your child’s compositional skills and use of colors. Basic facial and figure drawing will also be addressed as our students learn to draw a funny clown and scarecrow. These are just a few of the many great lessons our students will learn this semester: a new drawing every week, and a full set of skills to keep forever. THEY WILL LOVE IT! $25 supply fee.

Young Rembrandt Drawing: Level 2 (Grades 2-4) Back to school is in full swing as we present a bountiful selection of drawings that introduces our students to a fascinating world of color, pattern, and design. We say farewell to summer in our detailed still life drawing of a beach. We explore color usage and composition in our chameleon and fire truck drawings. In keeping with the season, our stylized fall leaves drawing challenges our technique and color scheme. Our students will learn cultural themes as they draw and color Hawaii inspired art. All this and more awaits your kid this Spring 2019 in a Young Rembrandts elective at Legacy. $25 supply fee.
